Our Community Garden
How many schools in the Los
Angeles area can say they have their own organic garden?
How many children living in an urban setting
such as ours have the opportunity to plant a zucchini or pumpkin
from a seed and watch as it grows into a wonderful, full-sized
vegetable ready to be eaten?
We are that school!
|
| Thanks to our strong ties to the community and the
work of Debbie and Ferris Wehbe , we have our own city plot which
has been turned into a beautiful garden that our children use daily.
Located at the corners of Fountain and June Streets, our garden has
been lovingly revitalized by several HSH parents and staff members
of the school. |

Thanks to the tireless work of Kitchie Rescigno and Mary Ellen
Schrock, along with our middle school science teacher, Ben Fullon,
we are in the midst of completing the following goals:
- Making the garden a bi-monthly part of the curriculum of each
class;
- Creating a grassy area in the front and around the sides;
- Adding benches (to be donated);
- Adding power and electricity in order to use our sprinkler
system (donated by Ferris Wehbe ) and the solar panels;
- Installing a fountain and adding gravel in the walkways;
- Adding raised beds for the “little gardeners”;
- Applying for grants that would specifically sponsor urban
gardens; and
- Creating a program that involves the local neighbors.
Children, parents and neighbors regularly
care for our garden.
